Our society is becoming more and more person centric that the other realities are pushed to the background. For example in the case of a crime, the focus is so much on the personal aspects of the suspect that even the crime per se is lost sight of. In order to make the right decisions and make progress on problems facing the society, we need to look at the complete picture and develop a solution that is constructive not only for the society but also for the erring persons. The concept of punishment needs to be revisited and instead an emphasis on removing ignorance should be made. From the perspective of both spirituality and science a person is a prisoner of the natural limitations in ability and also the past experiences. The idea should be to elevate the environment and not obsession with individual punishment. Removal of ignorance will also be part of the environment.
For example in the case of a criminal, he should be removed of the ignorance of the torture undergone by the victim because of the act. Technology may be used in this regard. Instead of physically punishing the wrong doer if the emotional states the victim went through can be reproduced in him, understanding of the suffering will happen. In general, we need to focus on the higher reality of mind to bring about real changes in a person.
The focus on elevating the environment by providing the right atmosphere for good behaviour and removal of ignorance for undesirable behaviour will quickly and universally result in fairer society than if the focus were on the person per se.
We need to come out of cliched thinking and be innovative to solve both the ingrained and emerging challenges facing the society. The above idea is one such step in that direction
